About Galgo Map

A community platform built by and for the people who love Sighthounds — long-nosed charmers with a serious couch addiction and a history that breaks your heart but will change your life forever. ❤️

Rita and Toon with their dogs

We (Rita 🙋🏻‍♀️, Toon 🙋🏻‍♂️, and our two dogs, Sidney our 6-year old whippet and Fénix our 8-year-old galgo) had the idea to start this project after adopting our Galgo a little over a year ago.

When we first moved to Spain in early 2022, we were mainly chasing sunshine after 15 years in the Netherlands, not expecting to stumble into the heartbreaking world of the Spanish Galgo. Back then, we had never even heard of them. But soon after settling in, we learned about the realities of hunting with dogs in Spain. That's also when we discovered Galgos del Sol, one of many incredible organizations fighting to change that reality.

We started donating, later volunteering, and ended up even crowdfunding and installing a Starlink satellite to help improve their internet access so they could run the rescue center more efficiently. Eventually, we adopted Fénix, a glorious long-legged noodle with a past and a personality.

The Journey

What began as a personal journey quickly became something bigger.

Along the way, we met people from all over the world who were as obsessed, kind-hearted, and delightfully dog-mad as we were. And we thought: wouldn't it be great if we could all find each other?

Galgo Map lets adopters, fosters, and forever-fanatics drop a pin (approximate, for privacy) on the map, share their favorite walks and fenced areas, and connect with others nearby. No creepy tracking, no exact addresses. Just fellow Galgo humans saying, "Hey, we're here too. Wanna go for a walk?"

You can set your own privacy radius from 1 to 25 km (5 km is the default), and pins are always randomized within that zone.

We also built in a space called Galgo Stories, where people can share their adoption journeys, triumphs, heartbreaks, and all the little ways their dogs have changed their lives. This project is for the community we found when we weren't even looking.

We travel often and love meeting Galgo people wherever we go. So if you're one of us—weirdly obsessed with this one oddly elegant breed—welcome. You're in good company.

The Galgo Español

An ancient breed, graceful and calm, known for its gentle temperament and astonishing endurance. But behind their soulful eyes is a complicated story.

In many parts of rural Spain, Galgos are still widely used for hunting. Many are kept in poor conditions, and when the short hunting season ends, tens of thousands are abandoned, neglected, or worse. Some are discarded before they ever see a hunting field.

Thankfully, a growing number of Spanish and international rescue organizations are working tirelessly to change this reality. Rescue centers like Galgos del Sol rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of Galgos every year, helping them find new lives across Europe and beyond.

With time, patience, and gentle care, these dogs can transform from terrified and malnourished into couch-loving companions. But it's rarely instant—some take months, even years, to trust humans again. Every Galgo heals at their own pace, and that journey is part of what makes them so remarkable.
